Cities in Texas that start with A are great and we have picked some of our favorites. If I had to describe Texas in one word it would be diverse.  Texas is a very large state but its diversity does not necessarily come from its size. One of the most well-known cities in Texas, Austin, is a hub for musicians from all over the world. 

Another well-known city in Texas, Amarillo, is a major transportation hub. Amarillo being on I-40 is a major crossroad for several large and distinct areas of the continental United States, and the northwest hemisphere in general.

There are many cities in Texas that start with an A,  so we’ve put together a shortlist of our favorite ’A’ Texas cities.

Austin

Let’s start with one of my favorites Austin, Texas. One of the things I love about Austin is its rideability and if you’re a bike enthusiast you’ll love Austin. Along with an active music scene and nightlife, Austin has some beautiful scenery.

The Balcones Canyonlands nestled between the Brazos and Colorado watersheds are some of the most beautiful country I’ve ever seen, and are home to an omnifarious group of songbirds, much like Austin’s music scene. All this backs up to a chain of lakes along the Colorado River, which is a fisherman’s and outdoorsman’s paradise. Source.

Austin, the capital of Texas, was incorporated on December 27, 1839. It has an estimated population of 965,872.  Known as “The Live Music Capital of the World”, Austin is home to the PBS concert series “Austin City Limits” and the annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences known as South By Southwest (SXSW). 

It is also home to a number of Fortune 500 companies such as 3M, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Amazon, Apple, Facebook (Meta), Google, IBM, Intel, NXP semiconductors, Oracle, Tesla, Texas Instruments, and Whole Foods Market who have headquarters or regional offices there. The Austin-Round Rock metropolitan statistical area has an estimated population of 2,295,303. Source

Abilene

Abilene is located in northeastern Taylor county and extends north into Jones County, 150 miles west of Fort Worth, and has an estimated population of 124,691. The city was incorporated in 1881 and became the county seat in 1883. The city is on the edge of a subtropical climate area that includes most of central and south Texas. 

With three church-related universities, religion has always been an important part of the community. Hardin-Simmons University, a Baptist university, was founded in 1891. Abilene Christian University originally opened as Childers Classical Institute in 1906. Source. McMurry University was originally founded as the United Methodist Institution in 1923. 

A must-see in Abilene is Frontier Texas, located in downtown Abilene the project functions both as the “trailhead” for Abilene and the Texas Forts Trail and as a destination itself. One wing of the building is a visitors center for Abilene, for the “Big Country” region of west Texas, and for the Texas Forts Trail, a 700-mile heritage tourism loop that starts and ends in Abilene.

The larger part of the building is an audio-visual and interactive center. Cowboys and longhorns, soldiers and forts, Indians, the buffalo trade, and vignettes of frontier life from 1780-1880 are all included in the experience. The Abilene Philharmonic performs at the Abilene Civic Center from September to April. 

With the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature located in Abilene and 25 amazing sculptures of storybook characters populating downtown, it’s no wonder that the city is known as the “Storybook Capital of America”.

Amarillo

Amarillo, Spanish for yellow, is a good example of the diversity of Texas. Amarillo is infamous for its diverse and unpredictable weather patterns, with massive temperature changes on a daily basis, raging winds, devastating hailstorms and “northers”, long periods of drought, late frosts, and spring tornadoes, dust-storms, and floods. 

The city is closer to the state capitals of Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado than it is to Austin. Amarillo is located in the Llano Estacado area, has an estimated population of 199,225 people, and its metropolitan area spans four counties; Armstrong, Carson, Potter, and Randall. This metropolitan area has an estimated population of 269,447 with the Amarillo-Pampa-Borger combined statistical area having an estimated population of 308, 064. 

One of Amarillo’s claims to fame is its 6th Street Historic district on historic Route 66. Also along Route 66, you have the Cadillac Ranch. Just east of the city, there is the second largest canyon in the United States, Palo Duro Canyon. Located only 25 miles from downtown Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon is quite a sight to see. With more than 30 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails it is definitely worth a visit. 

One of my favorite events is the WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo which attracts 22 ranch teams from across the country to compete. Other attractions in Amarillo include the Big Texan Steak Ranch, the Texas Air and Space Museum, and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and museum. Source.

Arlington

The City of Arlington was incorporated on April 21, 1884. It has an estimated population of 401,047 (and growing) people making it the second-largest city in Tarrant County and the largest city in Texas that is not a county seat.  Arlington is located 12 miles east of downtown Fort Worth and 20 miles west of downtown Dallas. 

The city was primarily a cotton-ginning and farming center. In the early 1920s, a tea room named Top O’ Hill Terrace, originally owned by Beulah Adams Marshal, was purchased by Fred and Mary Browning. Known as “Vegas before Vegas”, they converted the facilities into a casino and speakeasy, adding a secret tunnel and room for hiding the gambling paraphernalia during raids.

The restaurant, along with a tea garden, still exists today. Many visitors were unaware that there was a casino and brothel that operated alongside the legitimate business. In 1929 a horse racing track called Arlington Downs was constructed near the speakeasy. Top O’ The Hill Terrace facilities included a horse barn and a private stable for Browning’s prized stud, Royal Ford. 

Dr. J. Frank Morris, the longtime pastor of First Baptist Church of Fort Worth and co-founder of the Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute, later known as Bible Baptist Seminary and later as the Arlington Baptist College, was an ardent proponent of prohibition and gambling reform. The Bible Baptist Seminary bought the property and relocated here. Today, Arlington Baptist University continues to use the site.

Arlington is home to Six Flags Over Texas, a nationwide theme park. And of course, Arlington is the home of the Texas Rangers baseball team operating out of the newly built Globe Life Field and the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. Source.
