20 Entertaining and Hosting Ideas

Entertaining and hosting ideas at home are great ways to bring friends and family together. We have the best 20 entertaining and hosting ideas to spice up your party animal side.

How to Throw a Great Party

So how do you throw a great party? Small intimate get-togethers are more desirable in our 21st century as opposed to large parties. Of course, this is nothing new to the Texas scape, since Texans generally prefer smaller venues such as BBQs, tapas parties, and garden parties.

Our modern world is hectic, and it can be stressful. Entertaining and hosting shouldn’t be. We have a few tips to help reduce your stress over hosting an at-home event. The first tip is to have fun at your get-together. To do this, we suggest designating one or two co-hosts for your event. This provides you with support on both an emotional and a practical level. If you have a tight-knit group of friends and family, you can trade off with them when they entertain as well.

You do want to keep your get-togethers on trend and keeping up with event trends can be tricky. First, consider the group you will be entertaining. Are they adults, children, or a mix of ages, perhaps even seniors, or persons with special needs? Those needs can be quite varied so think ahead for any special accommodations that might be needed.

Top 20 Entertaining and Hosting Ideas

Texans have their own unique styles and preferences when it comes to entertaining at home. Some common ways that people in Texas, or any other region, might like to entertain at home include hosting dinner parties, hosting game nights, hosting outdoor barbecues, and hosting cocktail parties. We have put together our top 20 entertaining and hosting ideas.

20 Top Entertaining ideas to consider include:

  1. Plan a backyard barbecue, with grilled meat and vegetables, refreshing drinks, and outdoor games such as horseshoes or cornhole.
  2. Plan a themed dinner party, such as a Tapas party, Mexican fiesta or Italian feast.
  3. Set up a home movie theater and invite friends over for a movie night.
  4. Organize a game night, with a selection of board games and card games.
  5. Host a wine and cheese tasting, with a variety of wines and cheeses for guests to try.
  6. Plan a murder mystery dinner party, with guests dressing up and solving a fictional crime.
  7. Host a DIY class, such as a cooking or mixology lesson, for guests to learn a new skill.
  8. Organize a book club meeting, with everyone reading the same book and discussing it over dinner.
  9. Set up a backyard campfire and invite friends over for s’mores and ghost stories.
  10. Host a holiday-themed party, such as a Halloween costume party or Christmas cookie exchange.
  11. Host a breakfast or brunch gathering, with a spread of eggs, bacon, pastries, and mimosas.
  12. Plan a progressive dinner, where guests move from house to house for each course of the meal.
  13. Set up a hot chocolate bar with a variety of flavors and toppings for guests to enjoy.
  14. Organize a karaoke party, with a karaoke machine and a selection of songs for guests to sing along to.
  15. Host a potluck, where each guest brings a dish to share.
  16. Plan a themed dinner party, such as a beach-inspired luau or a cozy winter-themed gathering.
  17. Set up a DIY photo booth with props and a camera for guests to take fun pictures.
  18. Organize a craft night, where guests can make their own candles, soaps, or other handmade items.
  19. Host a tea party, with a selection of teas and sweet and savory snacks.
  20. Host a cocktail party with a signature drink and appetizers.

Food and Drinks

Try and keep options open for your guests, and offer games, drinks, and food that are appropriate for the occasion. Do not force party favors, games, or other selections on your guest. Keep it varied, for instance, serve both wine and beer. Offer seating options such as conversation areas and buffet seating. A well-appointed home bar will come in handy for last-minute get-togethers.

Entertaining and Hosting
Make Your Space Welcoming and Entertaining

Make your space welcoming and entertaining. You may want to include a theme depending on the event or celebration. Let guests know ahead of time if you have any special considerations. For instance, you might want the event to be free of electronic devices or alcohol. Just be sure to let your guest know this in advance along with any other considerations such as costume required and so on.

If you have a dedicated entertaining space such as a man cave that is open and inviting will make frequent entertaining that much easier. Remember your outdoor spaces also lend themselves to entertaining in good weather.

If professional entertainment is being offered at your event offer guidelines to your guests. Just let your guests know what to expect. An invitation is a good way to let your guests know the specifics of your event, such as an “open bar” or drink limit. If using a professional bartender determine ahead of time if tips will be accepted. You can leave the tipping up to the discretion of your guests. However, let your guests know if it is acceptable to leave a tip for the bartender.

Entertaining and Hosting
Use Visual Appeal with ‘Tablescapes’

Keep It Simple

We do recommend keeping your events as simple as possible. Maybe a lunch and munch instead of a full-blown dinner party, with a well-designed ‘tablescape’, some wine, and a handful of friends is to your liking. One of our favorites, when the weather is good, is a backyard get-together or garden party. This is especially desirable when having a slightly larger gathering so there is plenty of room.

If you live in a roommate household or have teenage and adult children you might want to designate a specific day for you all to share a day, a meal, and comradery. Have a theme or perhaps make a special dish to share, drinks and so on, making a celebration of the day together. Let others know what their role will be in the get-together, whether they will be providing a dish, preparing drinks, as well as other key items.

In Conclusion, Entertaining and Hosting

To keep your entertaining and hosting ideas fresh, visit some idea boards such as Pinterest for inspiration. Keep it simple if possible while still being festive. Sometimes just a few artificial flower leis and drink decorations can be enough. If you still have children at home and they are included in the event then get them involved with the planning and have them offer suggestions.

Joyful entertaining can be a slippery slope without a well-thought-out venue.

Texans however will respond that they are from Texas.

Texas lifestyle traits can be many things, however, some of the most prominent Texas Lifestyle traits are friendly locals, moderate temperatures, Texas hospitality, Texas foods, Texas pride, and a Texan indomitable spirit.

Texas has a unique blend of traditions that have shaped its way of life. The Texas lifestyle is deeply rooted in its rich history and diverse cultural influences. The state’s name itself, derived from the Caddo word Taysha, meaning friend or ally, reflects the importance of community and relationships in Texan culture.

Today, the Lone Star State is known for its love of barbecue, Tex-Mex cuisine, cowboy culture, and friendly hospitality. Texas Life

Texas Lifestyle, Find your Texas Style

I live in Texas and have lived here most of my life. Having been born and bred here as a native Texan, our diverse cultural past, the heroics of our frontiersmen, and Texas history, in general, have been deeply ingrained. I think this influences our Texas lifestyle a great deal. Even if not a native Texan, that background is adopted and becomes a part of who we are as Texans.

Art, Literature, and Music

Art, literature, and music are at the forefront of our diverse culture. Mexican American and German-American folk art have been prominent throughout our history. This arts and crafts movement is still reflected in Texas festivals and fairs throughout the state.

There are many famous Cowboy Artists throughout history that have influenced Texas art. Texas has been active in contemporary art as well. The towns of Round Rock and Marfa are artist communities that have become popular art centers for tourists and natives alike. Moreover, this Texas lifestyle embraces all forms of art.

Music has deep roots in Texas including traditional Mexican and European. It is the birthplace of the Mexican-European conjunto, an accordion-based ensemble. This was followed by Tejano, western swing, country blues, jazz, rhythm, and blues leading to the more mainstream modern versions of both country and rock that we are familiar with today.

Texas has had ‘many a famous fiddler’. The Texas fiddler Eck Robertson from Amarillo made the first country music recording in 1922. To this day Texas-style fiddle is prominent in American fiddle contests. Some of the early Texians played the fiddle, bagpipes, and other instruments.

Texas Music

Texas music is an important piece of the Texas lifestyle. As a matter of fact, Texas music is unique and covers a broad range of genres which also include gospel, ragtime, bluegrass, and cajun as well as others. Music is celebrated daily throughout the state of Texas. Austin Texas has over one hundred free live music venues on any given night earning its designation as the  “Live Music Capital of the World”.

The Austin music scene exploded in the 1970s when alternative country and rock came to the forefront with greats like Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Austin is also known for the South by South West (SXSW) yearly music festival and the Austin City Limits music events.

Texas Writers

Texas claims the Spanish explorer Álvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca as the first Texas writer. Cabeza de Vaca wrote of his washing up on the shore in Galveston and subsequent living with native Indians in the region for eight years as recorded in his book, La Relación published in Spain in the year 1542. Later editions were re-titled as Naufragios (“Shipwrecks”).

Many famous writers have lived in Texas. The author John Crittenden Duval, who wrote Early Times in Texas and Adventures of Big-Foot Wallace in the late 1800s, is considered the Father of Texas Literature. Moreover, many greats followed in his footsteps including the contemporary writers of today.

Texas Home Life

Texas has its stereotypes and that is OK, it is Texas after all, with its iconic old-west persona still in tack after all these years. Texas was an independent nation for ten years before approving annexation to become the 28th state in the United States of America. Many native Texans are sixth and seventh-generation Texas residents.

Texan characteristics are readily evident. There are many positive traits that can be attributed to Texans. Some of these traits include:

  • Texans are known for their friendly and hospitable nature. This means that they are often very welcoming and open to meeting new people.
  • Texans are hardworking and industrious. This is reflected in the state’s strong economy and its many thriving industries.
  • Texans are fiercely independent and are known for their strong sense of pride in their state and their culture. This is particularly evident in the state’s history and its long tradition of fighting for its rights.
  • Texans are also known for their resilience and determination. This is reflected in the state’s history, which is full of examples of people overcoming adversity to achieve great things.
  • Texans are also known for their strong sense of community. This is reflected in the many organizations and groups that exist to support and serve their communities.

Native Texans speak a little differently. You might hear a slight twang with a Y’all and Howdy. Texas English is a mixture of a southern dialect mixed with a distinct Texas dialect. For instance, a Texan might say “Life in Texas is bigger than all ‘git out and it is always fixin’ to ‘git even better.” Texans are rarely accused of being boring. Being Texan is a state of mind, for instance, ‘gittin your Texas on’ might be as simple as walking outside to view the sunset over yonder in the big Texas sky, kickin’ back at home, or going out on the town for a little honky tonkin’.

Texas life is easier to live than it is to define. We do have our unique history including the frontiersman known as Texians, outlaws, longhorns (first known as Texas cattle), and oil tycoons. Texas is known to have an abundance of crude oil, gas, ruby red grapefruits, cotton crops, and pecans. However, being the second largest state in the nation “land” might be our number one commodity.

There are many celebrities that live in Texas. Matthew McConaughey lives in Texas as well as many others. So why is Texas so popular? Texas has an appeal that is almost mystical in many ways. Even the rich and famous are attracted to its wonderful laid-back ambiance and diverse culture. Some people come and go, but as they say, you can take me out of Texas but you can’t take Texas out of me.

Urban Versus Rural

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, Texas has more farms and ranches than any other state in the nation. With more than 80 percent of the state being rural, you might be surprised to know that over 80 percent of the Texas population lives in urban areas. Texas consists of 268,596 square miles. Most Texas land is locally owned by just over one percent of the population. This has been a growing concern for many as big commerce and stewardship of land can get very complex. So how many people live in Texas? Texas has a total population of just over 30 million inhabitants. [SOURCE: World Population Review, 2023]

So how much is Texas worth? Texas is worth its weight in gold. Texas grosses more than $300 Billion dollars a year in exports, more than New York or California. Texas’s economic growth is first in the nation as well as the 9th in the world.

Texas has a diverse terrain, with an abundance of wildlife and fauna. On the legislative level, we sometimes struggle to keep those in balance since the majority of the Texas population live in cities and is oftentimes out of touch with what it takes to maintain our natural resources.

Small Towns in the Lone Star State

Texas is home to some of the most incredible small towns the nation has to offer. The Lone Star State is known as a charming getaway full of Southern hospitality. From vibrant cultural centers like Marfa and Wimberley to idyllic beach escapes like Galveston and Port Aransas.

If you’re looking for a small town with a big personality, Mineola, Texas might just be the perfect place for you. Recently named the best place to retire, this charming town boasts a lively downtown scene with plenty of options for shopping, dining, and relaxation. From fashion boutiques to wineries to yoga studios, Mineola has something for everyone. And with its beautifully restored Historic Downtown District, complete with antique shops, local restaurants, rustic bars, and cozy cafes, it’s easy to see why so many retirees are choosing to call Mineola home.

Our expansive rural areas with enormous natural resources are at risk as most Texas legislators are urban dwellers. Also with the many powerful special interest groups and lobbyists favoring big Pharma, and big commerce whose practices often deplete our natural resources, our Texas lands are at risk. Rural Texas voters are less than 20 percent of the total voters in Texas.

Why are so many people moving to Texas and what is it like living in Texas? Texas living means affordable rent and housing. More and more people are moving to Texas due to the lower cost of living as well as the strong economy. Living in Texas is great with median temperate weather most of the year and plenty to do year-round. The music scene is active in the major cities of Texas, with Austin being the music capital of the world. The authentic cultural environment is diverse having a positive impact on the Texas lifestyle experience.

Living in Texas & BBQ

Another Texas trait is our love of barbecue. Texas barbecue culture is considered a vital trait of the Texas Lifestyle. Read more about barbecue in Texas here. Texans do love their Tex-Mex!

The Texas lifestyle is heavily influenced by its unique blend of cultures, particularly the fusion of Texan and Mexican cuisine. Tex-Mex, a popular cuisine in Texas, originated from the border of Texas and Mexico where the two countries’ recipes merged. Anglo-Americans settled in Texas and were introduced to authentic Mexican food but struggled to replicate the taste with the ingredients available in Texas. This led to the development of Tex-Mex, which gained popularity in the 1940s and has since become its own distinct cuisine. Interestingly, many Mexican restaurants in Texas use Texan ingredients to cater to those who want the familiar flavors of Texas. One of the major differences between Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican cuisine is the use of beef in Tex-Mex, while authentic Mexican cuisine tends to use pork. Texans have a deep love for their Tex-Mex cuisine, and it remains a lifestyle staple.
