The Llano Estacado

The Llano Estacado, also known as the Staked Plains is a region located at the southern end of the Great Plains of North America.

When Spanish conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado y Luján went searching for the ‘Seven Cities of Gold’ in the 1540s on an exploration commonly known as the Coronado expedition, the natives in New Mexico told them to look farther east. Coronado named the area Llano Estacado, Spanish for “Palisaded Plains,” sometimes referred to as the Staked Plains.

Llano Estacado – The Staked Plains

Legend has it that the Spaniards drove stakes in the ground so they could find their way out. This vast elevated plain has long been recognized as a distinct geographical region. This region is exceptionally flat and surrounded on three sides by caprock slopes forming a precipice. The Canadian River forms the Llano Estacado northern boundary, separating it from the rest of the High Plains.  The western and northern escarpments separate the plateau from the Pecos and Canadian river valleys. The staked plains an area larger than New England later became a sanctuary to the Kiowa and Comanche until their defeat in the 1870s.
