What is the Texas Blind Salamander?

What is the Texas blind salamander? The blind salamander is also known as Eurycea rathbuni and is only found at the Edwards Aquifer. Edwards Aquifer is an artesian spring that supplies drinking water to over two million Texans. The aquifer is home to several unique and endangered species. Edwards Aquifer is located in South Central Texas and is approximately 4,350 square miles extending into parts of 11 Texas counties. This creates one of the most diverse subterranean aquatic ecosystems in the world.

Blind Salamander is a species of aquatic salamander that is endemic to the Edwards Plateau region of Texas in the United States, it is found nowhere else in the world. It is the only species in the genus Eurycea and is one of the few species of subterranean salamander in the world.

The Texas Blind Salamander was first discovered in San Marcos, Texas in the late 1800s. Since then, it has been found to inhabit a range of underground aquifers and springs, primarily in the limestone bedrock of central and south Texas. The species is typically found at depths of around 9-25 meters in these aquifers and is known to inhabit both flowing and non-flowing portions of these underground aquifers.

This Salamander is a small species, typically reaching lengths of around 8-9 cm. It is characterized by a transparent, scaleless body and eyes that are absent or reduced in size and non-functional. The species is pale pink in coloration and has a short snout and short tail.

The Texas Blind Salamander is a threatened species and is listed as such by both the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the state of Texas. As such, it is protected by both federal and state law, and any activities that would harm the species or its habitat are prohibited. The main threats to the species include the destruction of its habitat due to urban development, the introduction of invasive species, and the pollution of its aquatic habitat.

The Texas Blind Salamander is an important species in its native habitat, as it is a major food source for predators and is believed to play a role in maintaining the health of the local aquatic ecosystems. As such, it is important to protect and manage its habitat in order to ensure its continued survival. This includes protecting the species’ habitat from pollution and habitat destruction, controlling the introduction of invasive species, and monitoring populations to ensure their continued survival.

The Edwards Aquifer

The Edwards Aquifer is made up of sinkholes, caves, sinking streams, large springs, and highly productive water wells.  The Aquifers has a diverse animal life of over 40 species which includes blind salamanders, shrimp, and catfish. One of the largest outflows of the Aquifer is the San Marcos springs which is the habitat for five endangered species; the Fountain Darter, the Blind Salamander, the San Marcos Salamander, and the San Marcos gambusia, as well as Texas Wild Rice.
