Margarita Legends
The origins of the margarita are murky and much debated, but there is evidence that the tequila-based drink dates back to the 1930s or 1940s in Mexico. The name margarita means “daisy” in Spanish, with some saying that the drink is named after a socialite called Margarita Sames who liked to entertain her guests with her signature cocktail.
Others say the margarita is named after a Mexican showgirl named Rita de la Rosa and is believed to have been created by accident sometime in the 1940s. Its exact origins are still disputed, but it’s widely accepted that the refreshing cocktail was invented in either Mexico or Texas.
Generally, margaritas are believed to have been invented in 1948 in between El Paso and Juarez, Mexico at a bar in Texas called Hussong’s Cantina. The bartender, Diego “Dago” Mendez, created the now-famous Margarita for Margarita Henkel, daughter of German Ambassador Count Wilhelm von Rotenhan.
The margarita was first documented in a magazine published in October 1953 by Esquire. It was described as a mixture of Tequila, triple sec (orange liqueur), and lime juice served over crushed ice.
A Texas-style party margarita is a type of margarita that is typically served at a party or gathering in the state of Texas. It is made with tequila, lime juice, and a sweet and sour mix, and is often served in a large pitcher or dispenser for guests to serve themselves. Some variations may also include orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier, and fresh fruit, such as strawberries or peaches, for added flavor. The margarita is typically served over ice, and may be garnished with a slice of lime or a salt rim on the glass.
