Ingredients for Crispy Blueberry Crumble Recipe

The ingredients you need are frozen blueberries, rolled oats, oat flour, brown sugar, salt, butter, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. This is by far my personal favorite gluten-free dessert. Eating gluten-free can be a challenge and we love to share our best gluten-free recipe picks. This blueberry crisp recipe with frozen blueberries is so convenient. You can make it any time of the year and you always have the option to use fresh berries when in season.

Crumble originated in Britain during World War II and is a great dessert in its own right. Fruit Crisp is a more modern American dessert and our recipe combines the two, both crisp and crumble into one perfectly textured berry delight. You can make this with most fruits such as apples and peaches, however, we love the superfood aspect of our combination.

Considered by most to be a spin-off of fruit cobblers a crisp has the buttery crunch and the crumble holds it all together. We have incorporated some of the oat flour into the berries making it just the right thickness and beautifully bubbly. They all contain fruit, sugar, butter, and some form of flour.

How to make Crispy Blueberry Crumble gluten-free? This recipe is gluten-free and I really think this gluten-free version is even better than the original. Just follow gluten-free recommendations as given below. If there is not a gluten-free or GF on the label of the product packaging, read the ingredients label thoroughly.

Typical Blueberry Crisp Recipes do not include the crumble, however, we love this combination. This generous topping works so well with the blueberries and the juice from the blueberries turns out perfectly. The sauce should be slightly thickened from the first cook time in the oven,

Tip: You can make your own whipped cream with GF powdered sugar and GF heavy whipping cream.

It’s always a wonderful day when you have this tasty dessert. We know the preparation is easy, smooth, and harmonious. We know your results will be fantastic and this will become one of your favorite recipes.

Blueberry Crisp Topping with Crumbles Ingredients

Assemble ingredients for your topping in a small to medium bowl.

Combine the oat flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

Add ‘cold butter’ cut in chunks and use your pastry cutter to blend. Cutting in butter is not difficult with the right tools. A pastry cutter cuts your time down significantly versus using the old method with butter knives.

We used this tool #founditonamazon to cut in our butter. So easy peasy!

Complete Topping

Your topping is ready when it looks lumpy and you can no longer see the butter chunks.

Spoon the mixture on top of the slightly cooked blueberries. You can use your hands but do not scrunch the topping. Distribute evenly on top of the blueberries before placing them in the oven. Do not let the butter turn soft. Place in the oven as soon as the pastry cutting is completed.

This recipe makes plenty of topping which goes well with whipped cream or ice cream when serving.

  • 1 tsp real vanilla
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp GF oat flour

  • 3/4 cup cold stick butter (1 and 1/2 stick butter)

Instructions

Blueberry Filling Instructions

  • Place oven rack to middle or third rack and preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Prepare casserole dish with a light butter coating on bottom and sides.
  • After allowing blueberries to thaw, place them in medium sized bowl.
  • Add the lemon juice, cinnamon, vanilla to the bluberries. Toss lightly to coat.
  • Sprinkle with oat flour and toss again. Place mixture in prepared casserole dish.
  • Place in oven for 10-15 minutes until flour is well dissolved. Remove from oven.

Crispy Crumble Instructions

  • Place the measured oat flour, rolled oats, cinnamon, dark brown sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Toss and mix until all is incorporated.
  • Cut butter into 1/4 inch slices and place in the bowl. Take your pastry blend and incorporate until texture resembles lumpy potatoes.
  • Do not allow butter to soften. Spoon crispy crumble topping onto the top of the slightly cooked blueberry mixture with a large ladle or use your hands. Make sure the topping is slightly lumpy and do not mash it with your hands.
  • Place in the oven still at 350 Fahrenheit for 30 -35 minutes until the topping is firm, lightly toasted and the blueberries are bubbly around the edges.
  • Allow to cool with out covering for 30 to 45 minutes. This allows the topping to dry out and the blueberry filling to set. Crisp should still be slightly warm when serving.
  • Top with your favorite topping. We recommend sweet whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Always use cold butter to cut into your topping, otherwise you risk it becoming to mushy.
Adding oat flour to the berries allows it to thicken to a nice bubbly consistency when done. Precooking berries for 10 minutes ensures the berries are cooked through.
The dish is done when topping is a light toasty brown and berries are bubbling around the edges of the crispy crumbles.
Tip: You can make your own whipped cream with GF powdered sugar and GF heavy whipping cream
