Cities in Texas that start with N have an interesting past. The history of Texas is long and storied with many wondrous, prehistoric geological formations like the Permian Basin, the Edwards Plateau, and the Balcones Escarpment as well as the history of indigenous Native Americans and the diverse population and businesses of the modern age. There is much to say about the people and places of Texas and their importance, not only here, but throughout the world.

Our cities in Texas that start with ‘N’ cover some of this history with the immigration of Dutch and German peoples relocating to the New World via Texas. These people were soldiers, sailors, carpenters, farmers, lawyers, and businessmen, to name a few.

Many cities in Texas start with an N, so we’ve put together a shortlist of our favorite ’N’ Texas cities.

New Braunfels

New Braunfels is thirty-two miles northeast of San Antonio and forty-five miles southwest of Austin. It is the county seat of Comal County and lies at the intersection of Interstate Highway 35 and Farm Road 725 and at the confluence of the Guadalupe and Comal rivers.

Much like the Peters colony around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, New Braunfels and Fredericksburg were settled by the Verein zum Shutze deutsher Einwanderer in Texas which translated in English to the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas, also known as the Adelsverein. And, much like the Peters Colony, things didn’t go exactly as planned for the founders or the settlers.

New Braunfels was founded on March 21, 1845, on a spot chosen by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels on what is now Dry Comal Creek. The city was named after Prince Solm’s estate on the Lahn River in western Germany, Braunfels.

Despite the mismanagement of the Adelsverein, later organized as the German Emigration Company, the city of New Braunfels prospered thanks largely to the reliable water power produced by Comal Springs. Its location on the road between San Antonio and Austin helped make it a manufacturing center for people settling in the hills of Central Texas.

The city’s economic progress went hand in hand with its social and cultural development and the citizens voted unanimously to impose a tax for the support of a public school eighteen years before the Constitution of 1876 provided for such local taxation throughout Texas. By the early 1900s, the town was served by two railways and was strongly established as a manufacturing and shipping center, especially for the textile industry.

Don’t Miss in New Braunfels Texas

Today, along with industries already in place, New Braunfels has a new industry that has helped make it a wonderful place for residents and visitors, tourism. There are so many fun and interesting things to do in New Braunfels, not the least of which is the Gruene (pronounced ‘green’) Historic District and Gruene Hall, a concert venue where I have personally seen some great performances.

Tubing on the Comal and/or Guadalupe Rivers as well as spending the day at Schlitterbahn Waterpark is a must for anyone visiting the area. Great museums and other natural attractions and events make New Braunfels one of my favorite places in Texas.

North Richland Hills

North Richland Hills is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located eight miles northeast of downtown Fort Worth. The city is contained wholly in Tarrant County and is on State highways 26, 183, and 820.

Once again we find one of the most populous cities in Texas in the area of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Like many cities in this area, it had its start with the Peters Colony.

The city was named after a similar residential development to the south when Clarence Jones developed his farm into a residential community. Before this, the area was strictly agricultural.

North Richland Hills was incorporated on April 25, 1953, and grew quickly as people and businesses spilled over from nearby cities. The city grew by nearly 400% in its first two decades.

In the 1980s, North Richland Hills had a strong business community based around manufacturing with companies like Tandy Advanced Products and Ohio Sealy. Today, the city’s claim to fame is centered around the multi-purpose sports facility NYTEX Sports Centre.

There you will find junior travel hockey, youth and adult house hockey leagues, figure skating and hockey classes, volleyball, roller derby, indoor football, and more. And of course, it is home to the North American Hockey League’s Lone Star Brahmas who play all their home games at the facility.

Nacogdoches

Nacogdoches is in the central part of Nacogdoches County for which it is the county seat. Its location sits fifty miles west of the Sabine River and 100 miles north of Beaumont and is on State Highways 7, 21, 59, and 259.

The city and county of Nacogdoches has seen human habitation for several thousand years. Before the arrival of Europeans and the displacement of native peoples, it was home to the Hasani of the Caddo Confederacy.

After the French built a community on the coast, the Spanish sent an expedition to undo their efforts but found the settlement deserted in 1689. Twenty-seven years later, Domingo Ramon built a mission in what is now Nacogdoches County.

The mission only was abandoned until 1779 when it was resettled and an actual community established giving Nacogdoches the title of the ‘oldest town in Texas’. Because of its proximity to Louisiana, it was a center for trade with the French and later the Americans. 

Antonio Gil Ibarvo, the leader of the settlers that returned, built a home later known as the Old Stone Fort. Besides trade, the location of the town also made it an important part of military and political activities up to the Texas Revolution and annexation by the United States.

The growth of the city was hindered by the lack of major transportation routes through the area by rail or waterways but despite this growth remained steady. Nacogdoches has been incorporated since 1837 and the Stephen F. Austin State University, formerly known as the Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, has been located there since 1923. 

In 2021, the population of Nacogdoches was 32,118, and today the economy is based on agriculture, education, and manufacturing.  If you’re in Nacogdoches don’t miss the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden, the SFA Mast Arboretum, and many other parks, museums, and farmers markets.

Nederland

Nederland is only seven miles southeast of Beaumont on U.S., Highway 69/96/287 in eastern Jefferson County. Arthur E. Stillwell, along with the Port Arthur Townsite Company, established Nederland on his newly built Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railway which ran from Kansas City to Lake Sabine.

Stillwell received financial backing from Dutch investors which influenced the names of several towns he established along this route. Also, due to his ties with investors from Holland, he worked to make Nederland a Dutch settlement in Texas.

As the Dutch immigrants arrived in 1897, they quickly established dairy and truck farms. Rice farms were popular for the first decade until overproduction and the Panic of 1907 virtually erasing the rice industry there.

The area economy was revived shortly after the discovery of oil at the Spindletop oilfield on January 10, 1901. Refineries, oil, and associated petroleum industries are the mainstay of the local economy.

According to the latest estimation by the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Nederland, Texas today is 18,331. Check out the Dutch Windmill Museum when you’re in or near Nederland.
