Irving

Irving is on State Highway 183, twelve miles west of Dallas, in west-central Dallas County. From 1889 to 1894 there was a settlement named Gorbit (Torbit) that had a post office under that same name. The settlement and the post office changed their name to Kit in 1894.

At this same time, the location was shifted to accommodate a new rail line although the line did not follow its origins survey. In 1902, Julis Otto Schultz and Otis Brown promoted another townsite. They named this site Irving after Mrs. Brown’s favorite author, Washington Irving.

The co-founders sold the first town lots at a public auction on December 19, 1903. By 1912, the town had a population of 500. Also, by this time, they had a new Catholic and Methodist church, a bank, a newspaper, and twenty businesses.

The population of the new town had its ups and downs but, starting in the 1930s, the number of people moving to and living in Irving steadily increased. By 1963, the city had a population of 45,000 and over 700 businesses. Manufacturing plants produced products like paint, cement blocks, aluminum products, millwork, roofing, chemical supplies, petroleum, and electronic components.

The University of Dallas in Irving was founded in 1956 and, in 1971, The Dallas Cowboys started playing their home games in Irving at Texas Stadium. In 2020, Irving was home to seven Fortune 500 companies’ global headquarters.

Inside the city of Irving is the upscale community of Las Colinas, a 12,000-acre business and residential area. Las Colinas is home to Irving’s first Convention center. The Las Colinas area is also home to 190 acres of parks and greenbelts as well as the world’s largest equestrian sculpture, the Mustangs of Las Colinas, located at Williams Square.

The Irving Arts Center, owned by the city, is a home for the arts, housing ten resident art organizations. Resident organizations provide cultural programs for the community, and opportunities to participate in the creative process.

Community members can play a role in front of the curtain as musicians, actors, and artists, or behind the scenes as planners, technicians, directors, and more. Ingleside

The community around present-day Ingleside began in 1854. Different developments of the community have been known as Old Ingleside, Inwood, Ingleside Cove, Ingleside-on-the-Bay, Palomas, Cove City, and Cove, among others.

Ingleside is in Corpus Christi Bay at the eastern tip of San Patricio County. Tradition credits John Vineyard with naming Ingleside (“Fireside”) for his ancestral home in Scotland. When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway reached Aransas Pass in 1887, it bypassed Inglewood, and Palomas was established as a flag stop.

Residents moved to set up a new town site on the railroad in 1893. In 1890, real estate developers built a large hotel on the cove. The anticipated boom never materialized, however, and the total population during this period reached only 30.

In 1916 a hurricane destroyed many of the buildings and again slowed local growth. Between 1927 and 1950, several manufacturing plants opened up nearby including a refinery for Humble Oil.

Subsequently, Ingleside developed as a residential community and was incorporated in 1951. Today Ingleside has an estimated population of 9,519. The best thing about Inglewood is all the wonderful parks they have there. There are many community events.

Idalou

Idalou is on U.S. Highways 62 and 82 twelve miles northeast of Lubbock in east central Lubbock County. It grew up around the switch and small depot constructed when the South Plains and Sante Fe Railway was built from Lubbock to Crosbyton in 1911.

The origin of the town’s name is disputed: it may be derived from the names of early settlers Lou Bacon and his wife, Ida, or from those of Ida and Lou Basset, daughters of Julian M. Basset, the vice president of the local Crosby-Bassett Livestock Company.

In 1916, when ranchers began selling acreage for cotton and maize farming, Idalou had a blacksmith shop, a grocery store, a one-room schoolhouse, and a few houses. In 1917 a post office opened there with Sara E. Ross as postmistress.

A brick two-story school replaced the previous one in 1919. Idalou was incorporated in 1925 and had 538 residents. and twenty-eight businesses by 1930. By 1940 it reported 503 residents and thirty-five businesses. From 1960 to 1980 the town’s population grew from 1,274 to 2,348.

The growth of the community can be attributed to its location in a major growing and marketing center for cotton and sorghum. To find out more about Idalou, visit their official city page here.

Italy

Italy Texas is at the junction of U.S. Highway 77 and State Highway 34, on the Blackland Prairie, forty-five miles south of Dallas in Southwest Ellis County. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad reached Italy in December of 1890. The city was incorporated the next year in 1891.

Like most Texas cities of the time, Italy was an agricultural center. Settlers who lived near the city grew crops such as cotton, corn, sweet potatoes, and wheat. With the arrival of the railroad, Italy became a market center for the area’s residents.

Besides trade and agriculture, residents were attracted to Italy for its many schools and churches. By 1894 there were more than 350 students attending classes at the Italy Institute, Southwestern Normal College, and the Hope Institute. Six churches held Sunday services by 1900.

In 1913, the first electric rail cars opened service between Dallas and Waco. They were called the cream and crimson, later becoming the Texas Electric Railway. The main road through Italy, a graded dirt road stretching from Dallas to Waco, was known as the King of Trails Highway.

Today Italy has a population of 1,863. They are just off Interstate Highway 35E, approximately 15 miles south of Waxahachie and 20 miles north of Hillsboro. To find out more about Italy, visit their city page here.
