But many places in Texas have had continual habitation since circa 5000 BCE or longer. After European settlers arrived, starting with the Spanish, things changed rapidly.

Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, a coastal city, is located 130 miles southeast of San Antonio and is the county seat of Nueces county. In 2019, the city’s population was estimated to be 326,332 people, making it the eighth-largest city in Texas. It also extends into Aransas, Kleberg, and San Patricio Counties. Source.

Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda named the area in 1519 having discovered it on the Western Christian feast day of Corpus Christi, a feast commemorating the institution of the Eucharist, observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. Colonel Henry Lawernce Kinney and William P. Aubrey established the first permanent settlement there in 1839.

From July 1845 until March 1846, U.S. troops set up camp there in preparation for war with Mexico. Shortly after, the settlement was named Corpus Christi. The city was incorporated on September 9, 1852, and is now the largest on the Texas coast and the sixth-largest port in the nation.

Important historical events involving the Mexican Revolutionary War, The Mexican-American War, and the American Civil War all took place in Corpus Christi, Texas. Recently, a group of indigenous people known as Karankawa Kadla has been fighting to preserve a coastal area where thousands of Karankawa artifacts were found.

College Station

Located in the heart of the Brazos Valley, College Station is 83 miles northwest of Houston and 87 miles east-northeast of Austin.  The city was incorporated on October 19, 1938, and today has an estimated population of 120,511 people. Often associated with nearby Bryan, the Bryan-College Station metropolitan area has an estimated population of 273,101 people making it the 13^th largest metropolitan area in the state. Source.

The Houston and Texas Central Railway was built through the area in 1860. The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas was built 14 years later near the railroad track. There was a post office constructed nearby called College Station, for which the city took its name. The college later changed its name to Texas A&M University and is today the flagship of the Texas A&M University System; its main campus in College Station is home to more than 69,000 students.

Texas A&M University is situated on land that was once the territory of several indigenous peoples including the Tonkawa, Tawakoni, Hueco, Sana, Witchita, and Coahuitecan.

Carrollton

Carrollton, Texas is located in Dallas and Denton Counties and has an estimated population of 137,319 people. It has had a 22.55% growth since the 2010 census and is currently growing at 1.56% annually. Carrollton received its name from the home of the early settlers who came from Carrollton, Illinois. Before these settlers arrived a larger area that included the site where the city of Carrollton is today was home to an indigenous people known as the Witchita.

Like a lot of Texas cities, Carrollton started as a modest agricultural community. With the arrival of the railroads and a post office in the late 1800s, it grew to be a hub of business and professional activity. The city was incorporated on June 14^th, 1913, and by this time the town square was a busy commercial center. After World War II the city began to grow rapidly largely due to suburban growth spilling out of north Dallas.

Several times Carrollton has been voted one of the best places to live in Texas. Residents say that it has a small-town feel while being located near downtown Dallas. It is conveniently located near entrances to several major freeways. There are amazing community centers within the city and downtown has a brewery that hosts weekly bingo. Also, the Carrollton downtown district hosts many festivals throughout the year.

Cedar Park

Cedar Park is located 16 miles northwest of Austin in Williamson County. The city’s population is an estimated 77,595 people. The city was not incorporated until February 4^th, 1973. Source.

In 1873 George and Harriet Cluck, after having run cattle up the Chisolm Trail for many years, bought 329 acres of land that included the Running Brushy spring. The Austin Northwestern Railroad, which connected the state capitol to Burnet and Lampasas, was constructed by 1882 and passed through the Running Brushy and the Cluck ranch. In 1887, Emmet Cluck gave the community the name Cedar Park.

Cedar Park is located in the exemplary-rated Leander Independent School District and is home to the Austin Community College Cypress Creek Campus.
