Punch was Concocted as a Beer Alternative

Originally punch was concocted as a beer alternative in the 17th century for seamen and dock workers. Seamen’s punch was an alcoholic beverage and it wasn’t until the late 1700s that nonalcoholic versions were introduced in America for gatherings that included women and children.

Early punch bowls were often porcelain imported from China. Punch bowls eventually became standard serving equipment for both households and drinking establishments. Ladles were usually decorative by design made of silver, whalebone, or wood. In the later part of the 1800s, glass punch bowls became common in most households. They remain popular today for wedding venues, cookouts, and other gala events.
